Located in District 13 of HRM (Halifax Regional Municipality), Hammonds Plains is a community of residential neighbourhoods, coastal villages, and vibrant rural communities. Its population of almost 30,000 residents live within the community's 30 sq/km area.*

For hundreds of years before the founding of Halifax, the lands encompassing the Hammonds Plains area were occupied by a small group of Mi’Kmaq First Nations peoples, who used the region as their traditional residence and hunting grounds. Winter encampments were located in the area of Pockwock Lake, with summer treks to Bedford Basin to set up summer camp a yearly routine.**

Since the 1960s, Hammonds Plains-St. Margaret’s has become a major destination with the formation of many large subdivisions with over 30 km of pristine walking trails from Hubbards to Hubley, renowned sailing, a premier golf club, and one of Canada’s top tourism features – Peggy’s Cove.

The late 20th century brought tremendous growth to the community with the establishment of new subdivisions, such as Highland Park, Kingswood, Glen Arbor, Blue Mountain, White Hills, Maplewood and Waterstone. The growth brought with it increased traffic, new restaurants, a world class golf course at Glen Arbour and community baseball fields. Two new schools opened as Madeline Symonds Middle School and Kingswood Elementary were added to the community education landscape. Many folks from outside the community also visit the area for recreation uses as Hatfield Farms and the Atlantic Splash Pad offer unique opportunities for young and old alike. Today the Hammonds Plains area is considered a prosperous suburban community that continues to change and evolve.
